We might have gotten our first glimpse of actual Death Stranding gameplay during PlayStation’s E3 2018 presentation, but that doesn’t mean we’re any closer to understanding how the game will actually play. Thankfully, director Hideo Kojima recently posted more information about the game to the PlayStation Blog, and it does give us a bigger hint as to what to expect from the game.
If you were expecting Death Stranding to be a trippier version of Metal Gear Solid, or main protagonist Sam to just be Solid Snake with Norman Reedus’ face, you were sorely mistaken. Instead, according to Kojima, Sam is a “working man of sorts,” and the gameplay will reflect that:
Some might have already picked up on this, but Sam is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before. A typical hero is usually some sort of elite or someone with a military background. Sam is not. He is a working man of sorts — a hands-on professional. Someone with a skillset akin to a blue-collar worker. This is something you’ll intuitively understand once you play the game and control Sam. Herein lies our challenge, to create both a new form of gameplay and a hero that has never been done before.
As we previously noted, Death Stranding‘s most recent trailer seems to show a ton of gameplay revolving around Sam transporting items across the game’s seemingly massive map. This makes us think that the game most closely resembles a puzzle game of sorts in which players have to figure out the best way to transport specific items with their own unique properties from one place to another, with some stealth elements coming into play when the terrifying, shadowy entities show up, possibly during heavy rainfall. There are also hints that there will be some form of gunplay, though don’t expect Sam to be a dead-eye at aiming.
Unfortunately, the one thing the latest trailer didn’t tell us was when we’ll actually get to play the game. Death Stranding is still in development for the PlayStation 4.
