Fortnite Battle Royale captured the community’s imagination this weekend by breaking the sky with a one-time, mostly peaceful rocket launch. But apparently that was only the beginning of changes that developer Epic Games has in store.

Following the rocket launch, players are noticing that the crack that appeared in the sky is starting to grow and spread throughout the map.

The first oddity concerning the sky crack is that parts of it are still growing. One Reddit user posted three photos comparing the crack from when it first appeared to a few days later, and it’s definitely getting bigger.

But that’s not the only thing that’s got fans’ theory-making brains working in overdrive. Smaller versions of the main sky crack have been popping up throughout the map. So far, Fortnite Intel (via PC Gamer) has reported have reported seeing cracks at Lonley Lodge and another at the motel, destroying signage along the way. Epic is definitely up to something, as these cracks required the developer to create new assets for the map.

So, what does this all mean? The current prevailing theory is that the crack represents a rift in space and time, and that soon the parts of the map where smaller rifts are showing up will be replaced with historically themed items, based mostly on the introduction of 1940s-inspired character skins. However, those characters could also represent Mulder-and-Scully-type investigators into the paranormal, or they could also represent another form of classic movie characters like the superhero skins before them.

Fortnite Battle Royale’s fifth season launches on July 12th, so we’re sure more clues about the future of the game’s map will continue to surface throughout the week. In the meantime, keep your eyes to the sky.

Fortnite is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile.

Spit white-hot fanboy hate at him, trash talk his Gold II rank on Rocket League, or maybe just send him a cordial hello on Twitter @gogogoroff.

Following rocket launch, Fortnite’s sky continues to crack—but why?

The epic, one-time event that occurred over the weekend has a lot of Fortnite fans speculating about the map's future.
