This Resident Evil 2 mod is a living nightmare

One of the best things about Resident Evil 2 is that the game’s modders are having a field day with its lugubrious tyrant, the pale-faced, expressionless, hat-loving Mr. X. The Beachboy X mod put him in a revealing thong, the “X Gon Give it to Ya” mod gave him an appropriate soundtrack, and the “Every enemy is Mr. X” mod… well, that one’s pretty self-explanatory.

This most recent Mr. X mod, however, might be the most terrifying: it turns the tyrant into TV’s Thomas the Tank Engine.

Yes, that Thomas the Tank Engine.

Modder ZombieAli created the Thomas model and DJ Pop (who made the “X Gon Give it to Ya” mod) integrated the famous children show’s theme song and the chugging-train sound effects into the mod.

There’s something about Thomas’ lifeless face and the way he takes his corners that makes this mod a living nightmare. It’s the same effect that the Stay Puft marshmallow man had on me as a kid the first time I saw the original Ghostbusters. It looks like it should be harmless. But looks can be deceiving.

Mr. X isn’t the only thing in RE2 that modders are working on. YouTuber Enveloping Sounds has been modding the original RE2‘s fixed camera back into the remake, and the results are appropriately unsettling as well.

Unfortunately for console players, these mods are only on PC, but that doesn’t mean Capcom isn’t adding its own extra content to the game. The Ghost Survivors DLC launched a couple of weeks back, adding three new scenarios to Resident Evil 2‘s original six (Leon A and B, Claire A and B, Forgotten Soldier, and Tofu Survivor) for free.

Resident Evil 2 is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Thomas the Tank Engine as Mr. X is a particular kind of horror.
