ADG Short And Simple Review: Ragnarok Odyssey ACE

Posted on April 28, 2014 AT 03:56pm

Publisher: XSEED Games
Developer: Marvelous, Gung Ho
Release: April 1, 2014 PS3/PSVita Cross Play
Category:  RPG  / Adventure
ESRB: T (Teen)

My mom always told me if you don’t have anything good to say don’t say it at all. I’ve found out in this field sometimes you have to speak and challenge game developers to make the game they are capable of making. With Ragnarok Odyssey ACE, I just couldn’t understand why the game was such a hit on PS Vita. Maybe, because there isn’t much anything like it on PS Vita. That doesn’t make it absolutely a sure fit to compete against other RPG’s on the PS3. Just as my interest in the game was short this review will be as well.

Ragnarok Odyssey ACE is the follow up to the hit PS Vita action RPG, Ragnarok Odyssey. Cross-platform compatibility between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita has been added, so players across both consoles can share the adventure together. In addition, Ragnarok Odyssey ACE features a host of all-new content, including the Tower of Yggdrasil, an enormous ever-changing dungeon that will challenge players with different layouts and enemies each time they enter. Further, players can utilize the new “ACE Skill” system, an arsenal of powerful new moves that can be unlocked when enemies drop the “Proof of Expertise” item.

Reading that along would get people hyped to play the game even if they hadn’t played the original hit. So I was hyped ready to play a great RPG for the first time…in a long time. I get into the game. I build my character and I’m ready to go. The thing is the first enemies I encountered seemed be harmless yet I had to kill them. In fact most enemies you encounter in the game seem harmless. My kids saw me killing some of these creatures and asked me “why are you killing them, dad!” If that isn’t a problem..I don’t know what else to say.

The other thing for me that absolutely killed it is that I played for hours just to be instructed numerous times on the games features and system. The story didn’t have any focus hours on in into the game. I ran into a boss at the beginning chapters that was huge!!..but it just drops elbows. It could stomp me, grab me or more but that’s all it does.

The presentation alongside the story not drawing you in are also a problem. The graphics don’t look retouched are remastered to anything remotely close to a PS3 title. The animations are also not well done.

I feel I have said enough. Maybe, there is someone out there that will enjoy this game. I’m sure there will. I just think the chances of anyone enjoying this game are slim. Especially, someone just now thinking to get back into an RPG. ..and yes I still love you X-Seed and Marvelous. I just wish you guys did a better job on what could of been a great game.
