ADG Short And Simple Review: Strider

Capcom and developer Double Helix is bringing back the cult classic with Strider. This review we’ll be looking at the PS4 edition but it is pretty much the same game across platforms with the exception of performance and visuals. Let’s break this baby down and see if it’s worth its’ price tag.

  • Lightning fast combat – Use an arsenal of moves and weapons against your enemies whilst slicing your way through a massive interconnected game world
  • Plasma Cyphers – From scorching enemies to deflecting a host of bullets, the indestructible plasma charged cypher offers a range of action tactics for players to use against their foes
  • Seamless Traversal – Jump, climb and run through the expansive game world with the speed and agility of a ninja whilst climbing surfaces to gain that extra height and engaging the enemy from virtually any direction
  • Varied enemy design – From cybernetic soldiers to immense bio-mechanical creatures the enemy types in Strider guarantee engaging and unique combat challenges
  • Call on your allies – Hiryu’s robot allies return, providing additional support and access to out of reach areas.

Looking at the above features it seems like a crazy feature set. I have to be real. The game features as stated by Capcom here have been a little over exaggerated.  Starting with the first feature ; which really isn’t a feature just talks of the game. The combat is lighning fast. Your cyphers are deadly and offer range of attacks. You have seamless traversal. Everything they mention above is true but this is just the gameplay in general and all you can do with Hiryu. Outside of this the only features you have are Survival and the ability to customize Strider. I even found the upgrade menu pointless because most upgrades are found during gameplay and you can’t really “upgrade” them. These features do work and are ok but are not great.

The story is a little on the “meh” side but picks up as you play. I have to admit. I haven’t finished the game and I recently just beat The North Wind. So, this is based on about 2 hours of gameplay.

The soundtrack I have to admit is bumping. Along with the array of sound effects this really gives off the arcade like feel that Strider and Capcom are known for. I really have to give it up for them with the presentation. It really keeps you glued and playing.

I normally don’t talk about graphics but something hit me while posting news of this game and gameplays. I had someone knock this title because of the graphics and saying what’s the point of this on next gen. First of all , it offers gamers a chance to play a cool new adventure of the cult classic on next gen consoles. The game is more optomized on next gen consoles and runs smoother (not to knock on current gen..just stating facts). Strider and games in general aren’t just about graphics..but this game looks nice on next gen consoles.
