Atari comes back to your consoles in a remake of the classic title for Atari 2600 for PSN ($9.99) and X-Box Live Arcade (800 MS). This review was done with impressions of the PS3 version. I reached out for a 360 version, which would of been great so I could give impressions on the online because the PSN version seems to not have multi-player players in existence. It’s a shame cause this game does have the make of a good foundation for multi-player. I will not be grading the multi-player aspect in this review due to not being able to play online. The game does have a local multi-player so you, your friends and family can duke it out.
Warlords consist of a one-to-four player arcade action, defense, and strategy based game-play. You will defend castles from a maniacal dragon, unleash a torrent of fireballs, and crafty minions called snoots against your enemies strongholds. The game consists of many great features that include the following..
- Protect the stronghold! Defend your castle walls from the destruction of fast-flying fireballs with your mighty shield. Move the shield around the perimeter of your castle with precision and speed to deflect the fireballs or grab onto and charge fireballs to release even more devastating attacks back at your opponents.
- Multiple local/online game modes sweeten the quest for power and allow for cooperative and competitive battles with up to 4 players. Select the faction of your choice and engage in a number of competitive variations, including co-op siege mode, 2v2 or classic free-for-all battles.
- Rally your troops and pit them against your foes. Your loyal posse brings a layer of depth and re-playability to every battle and can be sent off to capture control points, gather power-ups to immobilize your enemies or bolster your defenses. Manage your troops wisely to gain the battlefield advantage!
ADG Plays Warlords For The First Time & Playlist Featuring Tutorial & Gameplay Videos
The Snoots and the Warlords have adorable characteristics and commentary which really adds to the games presentation and character. This is the strongest point of the game. The story and the characters come to life very well, too.
Issues with Warlords come into play with the game-play at times. There is just too much going on the screen at once which isn’t very good for the eyes. Fireballs you are defending against with one stick, minions you half to move with the other. Atari Interactive have put options in to change the amount of fireballs on the field but to be honest this isn’t enough. A human eyes can only be in one place at one time which makes it hard to multitask your offense and defense especially in “free-for-all”s. This puts a deadly blow to the game’s game-play. I’m not sure how you would fix this but the current scheme doesn’t work well.
WARLORDS TUTORIAL w/ADG
As much as I love the characters and concept the gameplay is where it is. I can’t really recommend this game to highly because of the gameplay issues mentioned above in this article. I really suggest downloading the demo to see if its for you.
