Goin’ Indie: Alien Siege Featuring Interview With Lost World Creation’s Paul Watts

Your boi, ADG promised more Indie coverage and I’m delivering again. This time we are taking a trip to space with Alien Siege by Lost World Creations. I also managed to get a few words with the creator Paul Watts to find out his background, inspirations and more.

Alien Siege is all about defending your homeworld. You have rockets and a blaster to use against the income attack of alien missiles, saucers and asteroids. This seems to be simple but honestly you will net to upgrade weaponry if you stand to try to survive.

I mainly enjoyed this game more with a friend cause you could relay strategies and defend better. The single player also offers some good classical arcade shooter gameplay.

Defend your planet from the incoming enemy missiles, flying saucers and asteroids using your AMS rockets and Proton blaster . With support for 1-2 players, upgradable weapons, four different stunning worlds and three difficulty settings.

I wanted to get a feel for what was going on behind the game. In my opinion, anyone who is willing to take a chance on classic gameplay in this generation deserves to be in the spotlight. I also, wanted to know the creator a little more so I spoke with Paul Watts, the man behind Alien Siege.

AntDaGamer:What was the inspiration for this game?

Paul Watts: I often take inspiration from the games I played when I was younger. I remember getting my first ever handheld console, the classic gameboy. One of the first games I played was missile command, it was amazing to me at the time, I would sit for hours shooting at lines as they decended towards pixilated buildings getting more and more difficult with each new round until I finally got swamped and had to start all over again.

With the increasing availability of smart phones and IPod touches we once again have a requirement for easy to control games that can be played for just 10 or 20 minutes at a time, no plot and no need to remember complicated controls. All this came together to remind me of some of the old classics and I became inspired to recreate some of them.

AntDaGamer: How long have you guys been developing games?

Paul Watts: Our first game was released in October 2011, it was a game called Starbeam and is hidden deep within the Xbox Indie marketplace somewhere. It was inspired by another game from my childhood, Starray which was itself was based on the popular Defender game.

AntDaGamer: What games have you developed?

Paul Watts: In order of release and all available on the Xbox Indie Marketplace

 1) Starbeam – Defender clone
2) Santa’s Xmas Dash – Button pressing game, surprisingly our most succesful game on the marketplace
3) Jigsaw Jumble – A simple jigsaw game for one or two players
4) Spaceman Adventure – A kids game with jigsaws, spot the difference and simple maths questions
5) Alien Siege – Fast paced missile command clone
AntDaGamer: Which was your favorite?

Paul Watts: This is actually a very difficult question to answer, I loved working on all the games. When you do Indie games you cant do it for profit because there really isn’t much money to be made, you do it for the love of developing games. I guess I will always have a special place in my heart for Starbeam, it was a flop on the marketplace but it was the first game I ever really finished. It was exciting to know that a game I had created was now available for anyone around the world to play and enjoy.

AnDaGamer: What can we expect from you guys in the future? Can you least give EGMers a hint?

Paul Watts: We are currently preparing to release a follow-up to our most successful game Santa Dash. The graphics are pretty much the same but the gameplay itself has changed to be clearer and to flow much better than it did in the original. We have also added new single player and multiplayer game modes.

 We are also getting ready to release a new Jigsaw Jumble game for Christmas, this will have Christmas themed jigsaws to complete for all our Jigsaw jumble fans new and old.
