The day old questions , “Are you ever old to game” is in my opinion on of the most ridiculous things to say. I hear it all the time. The minute someone knows my real age its “Shouldn’t you be watching your kids”, “Grow up”, “You’re a loser”. It seem like with gamer’s that wouldn’t be even a thought to even say but it is.
Last year, I happen to catch an article on Kotaku about a man, Gifford, Kotb and advertising exec/male advice giver spouted a terrible opinion about men playing video games past 30 on the Today Show. Him and the co-hosts went very stereotypical saying things like it being weird and the gamers being cellar dwellers.
If you watch the video above you will see that he went on to say men should have more on their mind at the age of 30. Let’s be honest. Life is good and they are loads of things out there in life but thats based mainly on your income and your lifestyle. What’s wrong with a middle class citizen who has grown a little old of the party scene or has settled down with family to take it upon themselves to sit in their home enjoying a nice entertaining interactive video game.
Isn’t that what games are entertainment and not that toy that only young kids use to play? The kids of yesterday are now men. Some of them are doctors, lawyers, or even video game designers themselves or more. What use to be only for kids has expanded to become what is simply entertainment. Does an adult who sits on their couch watching “The Young & The Restless” have more meaning in their life than someone who spends their mid-day playing some “League Of Legends”? In my opinion, it doesn’t at all.
People can take a look at the range of games and ratings to see that video games are for more than kids. Nintendo market is always been the great foundation to first get your kids into video games with games like Mario, Donkey Kong, and more being rated E for everyone. While Sony and Microsoft are more targeted for older gamers but not limited to them. They provide mature games for older gamers such as the bloody Gears Of War by Epic Games or the violent Killzone by Guerrila Games. Last not to mention some cross platform titles like Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto that has been the target of being to violent for kids for decades.
To say someone is to old to game is like making a racist remark toward ethnic background. It is ludicrous, immature, and just wrong. So the next time your in a party please do the older guy a little respect and just let him game. If you sitting around at the dinner table and your great uncle says “Man, are you ready for Black Ops 2″. Don’t be surprised just join in on the conversation and enjoy what has became a pastime of all ages.
