EA Forums Hacked Over the Weekend

THE BUZZ: EA has confirmed that its official forums were hacked over the weekend.
The forums were taken offline after a hacker defaced the main page to assess the damage. EA has since restored them and claims that no data was compromised. EA U.K. Marketing Staff Member Dan Sheridan posted on the forums:
As some of you noticed the homepage of the forums was defaced by a hacker yesterday using a very new exploit for the software which runs the forums. This was noticed quickly and we took the action to take the forums offline while we investigated the details.
This work is now complete and the vulnerability we believe was used has now been fixed.
There is no evidence that any personal data was compromised and as passwords aren’t stored in a recoverable manor, we are confident they remain secure.
EGM’s TAKE: Luckily no personal data has been breached and it simply appears to be a hacker attempting to show off his skills by changing the forums appearance. EA should take this as a warning and ensure that all security holes have been filled, as next time things could be a lot worse. No one likes to hear about hacks, the problem is they seem to be getting more frequent as the hackers gain in confidence. Hopefully other developers and publishers are taking the time to ensure that their security is tight, to avoid future issues. This follows a group of hackers who attacked EA’s Battlefield 3 servers, banning innocent people from the game.
What should be done with hackers if they get caught? Should the police be involved? Leave your thoughts below.
