As with the previous entries in the brawler series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate carries on the tradition of having unlockable playable characters. To get them, players have to go into a head-to-head battle against the new fighter, and once the foe is defeated, they join the roster. However, lose to them, and they’ll flee. The good news, though, is that Ultimate has a mode to give you another shot—it’s just hard to find.
While the brawler has occasional tips that pop up on loading screens, the way to attempt a fight again does not. To do so, players need to navigate to the “Games and More” section of the main menu and look at the bottom left-hand corner. If a new fighter has been failed, there should be a little door icon called Challenger’s Approach.
It’s here that players can fight any of the 68 additional characters (the starting roster is eight) that they might fail to defeat. Unlike previous entries in the series, new challengers will approach at random while playing the game, so most players will likely need to head here a few times on the quest to unlock all 74 fighters.
There are a few special conditions in Challenger’s Approach to keep in mind. If you just recently lost a fight, the new character won’t enter the arena until after 10 minutes. You can try the fight as many times as it takes until you win, but the same time gate is present between attempts.
You can also use whichever character you want when entering the mode. Since the initial encounter with a new character will happen randomly, you’ll be forced to use the last fighter you were playing. When entering Challenger’s Approach, though, the game takes players to the character selection screen, offering them a chance to pick their best character for the challenge.
For players that want to hunt for specific fighters to add to the roster, the other way to earn new characters is to complete the World of Light story. In it, players start with Kirby and can slowly unlock the other fighters by completing hundreds of quests. This method will take longer than waiting for the opponents to appear in different modes randomly, but you can at least make a path toward the characters you want the most.
