Super Mario

Has any game ever been as much of an emotional rollercoaster as the Switch’s Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle? First, the game leaked, and we all thought it was the dumbest thing ever. Then E3 rolled around, and the heartwarming sight of Crying Ubisoft Man made us all feel guilty for tearing down his work. Shortly thereafter, people got a chance to play the game and realized it was actually pretty darn good. And now, not even 20 minutes ago, we find out Luigi dabs in the game. Some of us are seriously considering making it my game of the year, and only one of us has even played it.

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates in 2017 and beyond, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

EGM’s top picks for this week:

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (August 29th)

Available for: Switch
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Paris, Ubisoft Milan

Why we’re excited: Other than dabbing Luigi? Okay, it’s a tactics game for the Switch, a platform that seems perfect for turn-based combat. Plus, the Rabbids/Mario crossover is so zany we probably have to see it for ourselves. The early buzz: At as of this writing, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is sitting at a very solid 85 out of 100 average on Metacritic. EGM’s own Ray Carsillo gave it an 8.5 out of 10 in his review. #NOFILTER #NOHOPE: Rabbid Peach has an Instagram account. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

Ark: Survival Evolved (August 29th)

Available for: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Studio Wildcard
Developer: Studio Wildcard

Why we’re excited: Plenty of survival games have come and gone without making much of an impact, but how many of them had dinosaurs? And poop? And dinosaurs who poop? The point is, Ark: Survival Evolved has been a little weird since it first launched in Steam Early Access back in 2015, but it’s also done a pretty great job delivering on a simple premise: multiplayer survival in a prehistoric world. We’re excited to see what the finished (for now) product looks like. The early buzz: Because the game has technically already released on all three platforms in some form or another, you’ll find no shortage of opinions out there on the internet. Still, as of this moment, we’ve got no Metacritic averages for this actually-out-now, 1.0 version. V-Ark: If survival isn’t your thing but you’re down for dinosaurs, you might want to check out the upcoming Ark Park, an exploration-heavy VR spinoff set in a theme park full of living dinosaurs. I wonder where Studio Wildcard got that idea?

Absolver (August 29th)

Available for: PS4, PC
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Developer: Sloclap

Why we’re excited: An action-RPG with a heavy emphasis on melee combat, Absolver has impressed the EGM Crew at pretty much every preview opportunity we’ve gotten. Given that the finished game includes some ambitious efforts to blur the ling between single-player, co-op, and multiplayer, we’re plenty eager to see how it all comes together. The early buzz: Only the PC version has enough reviews on Metacritic for an average. That’s at a 79 out of 100. Round two: The game has only just launched, but developer Sloclap is already talking about its plans for post-launch support. Up first are private matches, spectator features, and a new 3v3 game mode. Sounds neat!
