The biggest new games out this week: December 12th-18th

Vegans of the world, it’s time to mourn the death of millions of chickens. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the breakout PC gaming hit of 2017, is out now on Xbox One, meaning a huge new audience will be able to square off in 100-player survival matches in the hopes of winning that elusive chicken dinner. And not to make the poultry metaphor too labored, but it’s clear Microsoft has put a lot of eggs in the PUBG basket. Will it be enough to bolster the console through a holiday season almost completely devoid of any other exclusives?

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates in 2017 and beyond, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Game Preview (December 12th)

Available for: Xbox One
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: PUBG Corp., Bluehole

Why we’re excited: In terms of sheer numbers, no game in 2017 was bigger than Battlegrounds. While the Xbox One version is only launching into the Game Preview program—Microsoft’s equivalent of Steam Early Access—it’s still a chance to get on board that hype train from the comfort of your own couch.
The early buzz: No reviews yet, but the early buzz is less than ideal. After going hands-on, our own Michael Goroff called it “almost unplayable at times” thanks to the technical issues. He wasn’t sold on the control scheme Microsoft’s been talking up, either.
PUBG Crawl: Bluehole had a hard time optimizing the PC version of the game, so it’s not like expectations were sky-high for this console port, but Microsoft had talked up how much support it gave the team, even enlisting Gears of War studio The Coalition to help. Judging by early analysis from Digital Foundry, it’s really rough. Fifteen frames per second rough.

Fallout 4 VR (December 12th)

Available for: PC, Vive
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios

Why we’re excited: If VR has been missing anything so far, it’s the ability to decapitate irradiated mutants with a laser musket. That, and full-length, deep gaming experiences. Fallout 4 VR offers a fix for both.
The early buzz: Not quite enough reviews on Metacritic for a proper average just yet, but the score range on the three reviews out so far runs from 70 to 100 (out of 100). So it’s either decent or near-perfect, depending on who you ask.
The big asterisk: While Fallout 4 VR does feature all the content from the original game—including base building, which should be nice—it doesn’t actually include any of the DLC. In fact, it doesn’t even support the DLC content yet. Probably a safe bet that if Bethesda ever adds in support, it’ll cost extra, too. Ah, well.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files (December 15th)

Available for: PC, Vive
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar Games

Why we’re excited: L.A. Noire seems like an unintentionally great fit for virtual reality. With its focus on high-fidelity animation, it almost screams out for the up-close-and-personal viewpoint of VR. Plus, the gameplay already offers a bunch of short, digestible segments with tons of mechanical variety. We don’t know for sure that the port will work perfectly, but it seems like it could work brilliantly.
The early buzz: No reviews live yet. Sensing a trend this week?
Lost futures: While L.A. Noire developer Team Bondi shut down shortly after the game shipped, development staff was working on a spiritual successor called Whore of the Orient for many years before it was finally confirmed cancelled in 2016. The game was supposed to be set in the criminal underworld of 1936 Shanghai. Sounds like it could have been an interesting setting for games to explore, even if the title was, you know, a little ill-advised.
