PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

It feels like just last week we were writing about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds launching into the Xbox One Game Preview Program. Probably because it was last week. Either way, a slow-down in releases for the holiday means that PUBG gets to headline twice in a row, because this week the PC version is finally launching out of Early Access and into 1.0. It’s almost as if the team tried to do so much in such a short span that there wasn’t enough time for adequate polish!

Quick programming note: Due to the holidays, this will be the last new release post of the year. Nothing of note is coming out next week, though, so you won’t be missing much.

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates in 2017 and beyond, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds 1.0 (December 20th)

Available for: PC
Publisher: PUBG Corporation
Developer: PUBG Corporation

Why we’re excited: It’s a little hard to be excited about the “launch” of a game that’s already been out for the better part of a year and amassed one of the largest, most active player bases in all of gaming. Still, it’s a neat milestone, and it’ll be interesting to see if anything changes in PUBG Corporation’s approach to the game once the blue banner’s gone from the Steam page.
The early buzz: Remarkably, despite PUBG being the most talked about game of the year and charting quite high on some outlet’s already published game of the year lists, no major outlet has actually dared to publish a scored review of the game, according to Metacritic. Then again, all those broken records are a kind of review score of their own.
ContentKnown: While many of the new features coming at launch have been available for players to test, they’re still technically being bundled and released to the live game as part of this 1.0 version. These include the new desert map, Miramar, and a new 3D replay and killcam system. Other additions will arrive after launch, like map selection.

Bridge Constructor Portal (December 20th)

Available for: PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android
Publisher: Headup Games
Developer: ClockStone

Why we’re excited: Listen, Valve clearly isn’t interested in making games anymore, so it’s good to see the next best thing: whoring out its properties to other studios so they can make new games instead. This mash-up of the company’s first-person puzzler Portal with the popular Bridge Constructor series isn’t really a true sequel, but it does make use of official lore and assets, and Valve has provided support throughout development to keep things quasi-official.
The early buzz: No reviews are live for any version of the game yet, but if all you’re interested in is more GLaDOS, rest assured that her original voice, Ellen McLain, is back and as snarky as ever.
The port is a— Ow, what the hell? Sorry, we were just trying to tell you that the console version will be out in early 2018, but an enormous hand appeared out of nowhere and slapped us across the face for trying to make a tired joke.

Style Savvy: Styling Star (December 25th)

Available for: 3DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Syn Sophia, Nintendo EPD

Why we’re excited: Do you know how hard it was to find three new releases this week? We’re totally just filling space here. In no way are we actually, legitimately excited to use Styling Star‘s more than 20,000 unlockable clothing items and accessories to build fashionable outfits. Nor do we care about the amiibo support, apartment and boutique decoration, or any of that stuff. Obviously.
The early buzz: The game is already out in Europe (under the way worse name New Style Boutique 3: Styling Star), so we actually have some scores for this bad boy. With four reviews in, it’s at a 79 out of 100 average. If that number holds up, Styling Star will be the best reviewed 3DS game in the series.
‘Tis the season: By releasing this game on December 25th, Nintendo is clearly making an effort to remind us the true meaning of Christmas. Indeed, what was Jesus if not the first hypebeast.
