A New Frontier, the third season of Telltale Games’ critically acclaimed The Walking Dead series, finally kicks off this week with “The Ties that Bind,” an extra-long, two-part season opener. Longtime lead Clementine is back, though you’ll play through at least part of the season as a new character, Javier. Will Clem finally succumb to the walkers? Is there any hope left in the world? Will any of the survivors ever take a bath? Find out the answers to these questions and many more as the season unfolds over the next few months.

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates through 2017, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

EGM’s top picks for this week:

The Walking Dead – A New Frontier Episode 1 and 2 “The Ties that Bind” (December 20th)

Available for: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Telltale Games
Developer: Telltale Games

Why we’re excited: Telltale’s Walking Dead series more or less redefined adventure games, and we can’t wait to see what Clementine’s next adventures have in store for her. The early buzz: The first batch of reviews indicate a promising start to the season, with the PC version holding down an 85 out of 100 average on Metacritic. Generation gap: For the first time, the new episodes won’t be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. There is, however, still a way to get your decisions in past episodes to carry over.

Halo Wars Definitive Edition

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition (December 20th)

Available for: Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Ensemble Studios

Why we’re excited: Halo Wars remains one of the greatest console RTS games ever made, and nothing will help us pass the weeks until the sequel arrives like diving back into the original, albeit with a fresh coat of paint. Exclusive club: Not everyone can get into the Definitive Edition just yet. To play it this week, you’ll need to preorder a digital copy of the Halo Wars 2: Ultimate EditionPC police: Remarkably, the Definitive Edition marks the first time the first Halo Wars has ever been available on PC.

Shantae

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (December 20th)

Available for: PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Vita, PC
Publisher: WayForward Technologies
Developer: WayForward Technologies, Marvelous USA

Why we’re excited: WayForward are masters of retro platforming, and this continuation of the Shantae series seems poised to capitalize on the studio’s strengths. The early buzz: Not enough reviews are up yet to say for certain, but the handful that are out now are all quite positive, with the lowest, Destructoid’s, coming in at 7.5 (out of 10), and the highest, Nintendo World Report’s, sitting at 9 (also out of 10). The magic of crowdfunding: Half-Genie Hero owes its existence to a 2013 Kickstarter campaign, which ended up raising almost double its $400,000 goal.
