Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo pioneered the serious racing simulator on consoles when it launched on PlayStation back in 1997, but these days it’s hardly alone in the field. With the advent of Forza and a host of other also-rans, there’s a real need to differentiate, and developer Polyphony Digital is finally trying its hand at just that. Gran Turismo Sport isn’t just a real driving simulator, it’s a racing game focused on online competition and esports, with the official backing of auto racing federation FIA and a (comparatively) dialed back selection of cars and tracks. This isn’t a jack-of-all-trades. It’s precision engineering. Whether this pivot was the right one, however, remains to be seen.

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates in 2017 and beyond, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

Gran Turismo Sport (October 17th)

Available for: PS4
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Polyphony Digital

Why we’re excited: Gran Turismo sequels officially come around less often than the Olympics, so we need to take each one as the blessing that it is. Plus, you know, there’s no better benchmark for how close humanity is to creating a photorealistic tire, rendered in real-time.
The early buzz: Right now, GT Sport sits at a 78 out of 100 average on Metacritic. Still early days, obviously, but if it holds it would be the lowest average for any game in the series.
A million turns I haven’t done: Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton lends his expertise to Gran Turismo Sport in a series of tutorials designed to teach you real-world racing techniques. If the promotional trailer Sony released is any indication, he’ll probably seem marginally disinterested the whole time.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole (October 17th)

Available for: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft San Francisco

Why we’re excited: South Park: The Stick of Truth was a better RPG than it had any right to be, proving that licensed games can actually live up to the standards of their source material with a smart approach. The Fractured but Whole promises more of the same, with static turn-based battles swapped out for tactical-RPG gameplay, and the fantasy trappings replaced with a superhero theme.
The early buzz: Scores on Metacritic run the gamut so far. The Xbox One version ranks highest with an 87 out of 100 average. PC comes next with an 84, and PS4 rounds things out with an 80. Ray was bullish on the game, awarding it a 9.0 in our review.
Connected universe: What modern superhero story would be complete without a bunch of complicated tie-in material? If you want the whole story behind The Fractured but Whole, you’ll need to watch the recent episode of the show that served as a prequel. It’s fittingly titled.

Fire Emblem Warriors (October 20th)

Available for: Switch, 3DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Omega Force, Team Ninja

Why we’re excited: All our Fire Emblem waifus and husbandos in one place, kicking hundreds and hundreds of butts in the ridiculous fashion only a Warriors-style game can offer? Sign us up. Sure, it might not be the truest way to capture the spirit of a series that’s all about having to make meaningful choices in battle, but sometimes you want to just turn your brain off and watch hotties pound some faceless goons.
The early buzz: No reviews are live for either the Switch or (New Nintendo) 3DS (family of systems) versions. Still a few days left, but still, given that Nintendo is usually pretty generous with embargoes, take that to mean what you will.
Naughty, naughty: We tried to find a screenshot from the game that wasn’t just Camilla’s boobies, but after a few hours of searching we realized they don’t exist. All Fire Emblem Warriors screenshots in existence are of Camilla’s boobies.
