Forza

This week sees the arrival of Forza Motorsport 7, the seventh mainline game in Microsoft’s racing sim series. We have to say mainline because the Forza series now puts out spinoffs with a slightly different focus to make sure at least one title release every year. The most well-known, of course, are the Forza Horizon games, which focus on open-world racing in exotic locales. Still, the one-offs are even more intriguing. Who could forget Heroes of Forza, the Turn 10’s ill-advised attempt to cash-in on the MOBA craze, or Forza Paint, the spin-off about spending hours using the livery editor to put anime girls on the side of cars without ever actually driving them? Actually, that first one might have just been a fever dream, and the second is just whatever we do when a new Forza comes out.

Read on to get the lowdown on all the new releases, including our picks for the most exciting games out this week. And if you’re wondering about future release dates, check out EGM’s full list of gaming release dates in 2017 and beyond, updated regularly as new dates are announced.

Forza Motorsport 7 (October 3rd)

Available for: Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Turn 10 Studios

Why we’re excited: You can put a skull mask on your driver, as you can see up above. Sure, you’ll need to grind for loot boxes to do it, but that’s all worth it for knowing that your driver, who you can’t see most of the time while you’re actually playing, loots bomb af. Also, there’s a huge selection of cars and they added dynamic weather and I’m sure some other stuff no one will really care about. The early buzz: We’re at an 89 out of 100 on Metacritic for the Xbox One version, and a 79 for the PC one. Then again, the game is Xbox Play Anywhere, so if you buy one you get the other at no additional cost. Keep an eye out for Ray’s review in the coming days, too. We have to go back: Though the game is officially out today, you could have started playing it last week if you’d pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition. If Doc Brown shows up and offers to let you cash in on that deal, maybe take him up on his offer.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar (October 3rd)

Available for: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, Linux
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Developer: Airship Syndicate

Why we’re excited: The JRPG-inspired Battle Chasers: Nightwar marks the return to gaming of legendary comics writer and artist Joe Madureira, who previously played a major role in the Darksiders series. Actually, a lot of the Vigil team was involved in making Nightwar, since its developer, Airship Syndicate, rose from the ashes of that studio after THQ went under. The early buzz: The PlayStation 4 version of Battle Chasers has a 77 average, and the PC one sits at 78. EGM’s Evan Slead liked it a bit more than that, giving the game a 9.0 out of 10 in his review. Book club: Though you were probably unaware, this game is actually based on an old fantasy comic series created by Joe Mad back in the late ’90s. It ran for just nine issues over the course of three years. But, hey, in an age of media recycling, nothing stays dead forever.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (October 6th)

Available for: 3DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: AlphaDream Corporation

Why we’re excited: This expanded remake updates the first game in the Nintendo’s series of Mario & Luigi RPGs, putting the overalled brothers into a world of turn-based battles. The early buzz: No reviews are up yet for the game, since it’s not due out for a few more days. Emma is playing the game right now, though, and we just walked over and asked her for a thumbs up or thumbs down. At the risk of being blacklisted by Nintendo, EGM can officially confirm that her thumb was mostly upright. The jumpee has become the jumper: There’s more to this package than just an update of the 2003 Game Boy Advance original, though. It also includes a new adventure following a character named Captain Goomba, letting you see how things play out on the other side of a Mario story, for a change.
