CRITERION COLLECTION VERSION OF “GODZILLA” ANNOUNCED

Oh no, there goes Tokyo…
Criterion has announced that they will release the original “Godzilla” on DVD and Blu-ray on January 24.
The collection will include both “Gojira,” the original 1954 version of the film, as well as “Godzilla: King Of The Monsters!”, the 1956 reworked American version. The Blu-rays will feature new high-definition digital restorations, with “Gojira” also getting an uncompressed monaural soundtrack and newly translated subtitles.
In addition, both versions of the film will feature individual commentaries by David Kalat, the author of “A Critical History And Filmography Of Toho’s ‘Godzilla’.”
Also included are interviews with the cast and crew — including Haruo Nakajima, who played Godzilla — a featurette on the film’s effects, a new interview with Japanese film critic Tadao Sato, an illustrated audio essay about a fishing vessel’s sinking that inspired the film, the original trailers, an essay by critic J.
