Final Fantasy fans should gear up for a “big year” ahead, according to brand manager Shinji Hashimoto.
Hashimoto recently appeared in an interview with Edamame Arcade Channel (via Siliconera), which was mostly focused on the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game. However, Hashiomoto took a little time out of the interview to talk about the future of the Final Fantasy series as a whole, and hinted at a big year on the horizon.
“This year is the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy,” Hashimoto said. “There aren’t many things that go for 30 years. With the support of the fans of Final Fantasy, next year will be the 31st year, and our teams are busy working on new titles. They are all gearing up for a big year next year. Next year is going to be a big year.”
This ties in nicely with an investor conference call Square Enix held earlier this month, during which CEO Yosuke Matsuda promised that we’d be seeing several important announcements in spring 2018. There are at least two big Final Fantasy titles we know of that would both fit this timeline and would, indeed, make 2018 a “big year” for the series: the Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Final Fantasy-crossover Kingdom Hearts III. While neither Square Enix representative has confirmed that we’ll be seeing these games for sure, we know that Kingdom Hearts III, at least, is scheduled to release in 2018.
At the moment, the Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development for the PlayStation 4, and has no known release date. Kingdom Hearts III will release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime in 2018.
