THE BUZZ: Remember when the 3DS was the system everybody thought was doomed, and which nobody supposedly wanted? That little system is now Nintendo’s fastest-selling to date.
EGM’s TAKE: If there’s one certainty in this industry, it’s that nothing is certain. It really wasn’t that long ago that the 3DS wasn’t selling many units, didn’t have a lot of excitement surrounding it, and was expected to crumble under the might blow of the PlayStation Vita.
Nintendo has just announced today that the 3DS has officially sold through 5 million units in Japan, making it the company’s fastest-selling gaming hardware to date—beating out other previous top-sellers the GameBoy Advance, Wii, and DS.
Now, of course, this comes after Nintendo made a drastic price cut to the hardware, and after some major titles have now been released for it. Still, one can’t help but congratulate Nintendo for the huge turn-around they’ve made for the portable. Just 10 weeks ago, the 3DS was still tracking a decent ways below those three other platforms—now, it’s on course to start handily beating them.
