60% of Customers Won’t Buy a Console That Blocks Used Games, GameStop Says

While speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, GameStop’s chief financial officer Rob Lloyd claimed that over half of their customers wouldn’t purchase a console that blocked used games.

“I think it was 60% of customers who said they wouldn’t buy a new console [that blocks used games],” Lloyd said. “Consumers want the ability to play pre-owned games, they want portability in their games; they want to play physical games. And to not have those things would be a substantial reason for them not to purchase a new console.”

According to Kotaku’s own poll, Lloyd’s statistics seem about right.

“It’s really only about 4% of our used game sales that are games released in the last 60 days,” Lloyd mentioned.

During the conference, Lloyd also mentioned how GameStop would be closing close to 250 stores this year.
