The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are the biggest consoles battling it out in the gaming market right now. In June 2018, however, all of them lost.
The NPD report for June is in, and it has some shocking sales numbers. In a weird twist, the top-selling console for the month wasn’t the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. Instead, it was the NES Classic.
“This is the first time a Nintendo Entertainment System console has led in monthly unit sales since NPD tracking began in 1995,” the NPD report reads.
By other stats, the PlayStation 4 did pull out ahead in June. In terms of the amount of dollars made, the $300 PlayStation 4 console outsold the $60 NES Classic. However, the NES Classic sold many more units.
The race between Nintendo and Sony continued in the game sales market. Mario Tennis Aces claimed its spot as the best-selling game of the month, but God of War took second place for its third consecutive month of high sales. Interestingly, Grand Theft Auto V saw a huge jump in sales, and made its way into the number three spot. In the case of God of War, the game is selling better faster than any other PlayStation exclusive, and has beat the record set by The Last of Us.
We’ll keep an eye out for how these sales trends continue into July and August.
