April wasn’t a very profitable month for the North American video game market, according to the latest NPD report.
Both hardware and software sales were down, with overall customer spending dropping 15 per cent compared to last year. The only area with increased sales, surprisingly, was the accessories segment?an area that includes toys-to-life figurines like Amiibo, Skylanders toys, and the recently cancelled Disney Infinity.
Though nothing topped Mortal Kombat X‘s sales last year, Dark Souls III and Ratchet & Clank both sold extremely well, topping the list in software sales. Dark Souls III is selling nearly twice as well as Dark Souls II, but the success of Ratchet & Clank, a single-platform release, is the biggest surprise.
“Ratchet & Clank had the best launch of any game in the Ratchet & Clank franchise when adjusting for the number of days sold in the data month, with sales recapturing success not seen for the franchise since the height of the PlayStation 2 era,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan, per GamesBeat’s reporting.
Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all declined GamesBeat’s request for comment on the subject of console sales.
