A YouTube Documentary On One Of Gaming’s Most Controversial Characters

Posted on February 27, 2012 AT 03:08pm

THE BUZZ: Poison—a character who started her life so humbly as a random character in Final Fight, and who has grown into such a divisive topic. Now, a new mini-documentary has been created about her and her journey through controversy.

EGM’s TAKE: For any of you out there who are regular readers of EGMNOW, you’ll know that I’ve talked many times about the topic of Poison in the past. She’s a very interesting character—one who offers up a highly personal (and often heater) debate on the question of if video games are the proper place to bring up discussions about things like gender identity.

The question surrounding Poison isn’t just “is or isn’t she transgender”; it’s also the question of what Capcom originally intended her to be, and if those intensions were modified during the character’s life. Over the weekend, YouTube member MegatonStammer released a nearly 20 minute mini-documentary which goes into Poison’s history and the question of her gender—one which gave a few details even I had never seen before.

If you have an interest in Poison and the debate she brings up—or are wondering what in the world the debate even is in the first place—then this is a very interesting and informative video on the subject.
