Xbox Live members will have to keep their Gold subscription active if they want to retain access to free Games with Gold titles after downloading them.
Currently on Xbox 360, after downloading a free Games with Gold title you can keep and play that game forever, even if your subscription runs out. However, according to the small print in yesterday’s Xbox One announcement, players will need an active subscription to access the games on Microsoft’s newer console.
“For paid Gold members only,” the small print reads. “On Xbox One, active Gold membership required to play free games you’ve downloaded.”
So downloaded Xbox One games will remain on your hard drive, but to access them an active Xbox Live Gold subscription must be detected. There was no mention about anything changing for Xbox 360 titles. This makes sense when you think about it, because it allows Microsoft to offer newer titles as part of the promotion.
Games with Gold will begin on Xbox One in June with Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault.
