Activision Explains The Reasons Behind The Call Of Duty: Elite PS3 Beta Delay

Posted on August 14, 2011 AT 04:50pm

THE BUZZ: Activision has finally decided to discuss the reasoning behind their decision to delay the beta release of Call of Duty: Elite for the PS3.  Their explanation, while far from surprising in this age of delays and pushed street dates, does offer a little insight into the challenges that the team is facing in the PlayStation port.

WHAT WE KNOW: The company explained via their official Twitter account that the reason for the ongoing delays in the Call of Duty: Elite service have more to do with the challenges confronting the development team at Beachhead Studios, rather than a desire to see the Beta go live.  The developers haven’t been able to start work on the PS3 Beta of Elite primarily because of the complexity of the console App.  A quick and easy port from Xbox 360 to PS3 just isn’t in the cards.

“Understand frustrations,” began the company’s 140< announcement on the continued delays, “but Elite is a very complex development challenge. There is no simple port to PS3. Critical we do it right.”

Activision did reveal that the PS3 Beta has now entered QA testing and that players will soon be able to get their hands on the multi-player extensions offered by the Elite application.

EGM’s TAKE: The update from the company, while encouraging, did little more than kick the can down the road and press the patience of PS3 users waiting to tap into the Elite experience.  “PS3 players: PS3 Elite beta is currently in QA testing. When they give green light we will announce ASAP,” read the official proclamation.  While it’s nice to know that the team is pressing ahead, the vague target date for the Beta is going to cause consternation among PlayStation users to grow in advance of Modern Warfare 3′s release on November 8, 2011.
