Activision: Mobile Graphics Will Catch Up To Xbox 360 In One Generation

Posted on August 26, 2012 AT 12:30pm

Mobile devices have had huge technical leaps thanks to a heated arms race between companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung, but the ceiling hasn’t been hit just yet. In fact, phones and tablets will be more powerful than Xbox 360s.

That’s the word from Activision mobile vice president Greg Canessa, who tells CVG that with the current pace of smartphone and tablet development, you’ll be playing even more Call of Duty on mobile systems:

The CPU and GPU capabilities of mobile devices will reach Xbox 360 levels of graphical fidelity and processing power within the next generation.

Activision will be creating a mix of casual and immersive gaming experiences on mobile, but as I say smartphones are more and more allowing for us to create those kinds of experiences. The games that Activision publishes on console, the games it publishes on PC, pretty soon we’ll be publishing those kinds of experiences on tablets and smartphones.

If it’s possible to get the experience of a Modern Warfare title on an iPad, Canessa says that Activision will be all-in on that front, not worrying at all about it impacting their console and PC sales.

Although CVG tried to pose the question in a hypothetical situation with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Canessa didn’t take the bait, only saying that the concept would be interesting. MW4 is rumored to be in development.
