Activision has confirmed that it will switch to a staggered release of its Skylanders figurines, following the decision to make it into a “year-round franchise.”
Previously, the publisher has released new figurines in waves that included large batches of new characters, but now it will release smaller quantities of characters spread across the entire game’s life.
“This year we’ve expanded to a year-round franchise, meaning we’ve reserved more characters for 2014 than we normally would,” Activision’s Glenn Oliver told Polygon. “There are a good 20 percent of them that haven’t come out yet [for Swap Force]. We wanted to take advantage of the fact that we know there are still a lot of opportunities, like birthdays and Easter, for gift-giving, and we want you to be able to go a store and buy new Skylanders.”
Five new characters are set to release “later this spring,” according to Oliver. One of these will be a special seasonal version of Trigger Happy, a character introduced in Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. Springtime Trigger Happy will be available in a special egg-shaped packaging and has a new pose, new powers, a new color scheme, gold weapons, and a bunny ears hat.
