Activision Talks Big Budget for Destiny, Competing with Call of Duty

Posted on June 21, 2013 AT 01:26pm

The budget Activision has allocated for Bungie’s Destiny indicates the publisher has an insurmountable level of faith in the creator of Halo‘s latest IP Destiny.

In an interview with IGN, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg explained that while the budget for Destiny certainly is high, it’s not without merit.

“We wouldn’t be making that investment if we didn’t believe in the potential,” Hirshberg said. “From the earliest days of sitting down with Bungie and hearing their vision for the game, it was a truly impressive and ambitious idea.”

Hirshberg was also asked about the similarities between Call of Duty: Ghosts and Destiny—both shooters with a heavy emphasis on online multiplayer.

“They’re very different games made by very different creative visionaries,” Hirshberg said “I think that they can peacefully coexist with one another. Call of Duty‘s multiplayer is a visceral, impactful, white-knuckle-ride experience. What Bungie has done, they have done better than anyone.

“I think what we’ve seen is that if there are good games in this genre, people will show up to play them. But if you have to compete, it’s nice to compete with yourself.”

Destiny is slated for launch on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime 2014.
