Overwatch

The tyranny of Hanzo in Overwatch will soon end, now that Blizzard has announced a nerf coming to the character.

Defense hero Hanzo recently underwent a sizable rework, giving the character two new abilities, among other changes. One of these abilities- replacing his Scatter Arrow- was the new Storm Arrows, allowing Hanzo to fire six fully-drawn arrows in about two seconds. It is one of the best damage-dealing abilities in the game and, anecdotally, has given Hanzo one of the highest pick-rates in the history of Overwatch. (Keeping track of my matches over three full days of consistent play following his rework, not a single match lacked a Hanzo on at least one team).

Many in the community agree that these Storm Arrows, combined with his new lunge ability and the increase in the speed of his standard arrows, made the character fairly (if not wildly) overpowered. Blizzard noticed the character’s imbalance as well, and announced on Overwatch‘s official forum that the Storm Arrows’ damage would be reduced from 80 to 70 per arrow.

“We’ve been testing some nerfs internally and have decided to make a change for the upcoming patch,” principal designer Geoff Goodman wrote. “We’re reducing the damage per arrow from 80 to 70, which not only drops them out of one-shot territory for 200 hp heroes (w/ dmg boost), but also drops them out of one-shot range of 150 heroes such as Tracer and D.Va pilot.”

One community response to the post asked if anything would be done about the drastic increase to the character’s ultimate charge since the rework. Goodman explained that the damage decrease would already have a notable affect on Hanzo’s ability to build ultimate charge, but he assured fans that the developers are continuing to look at the character and will address more if needed.

The game’s “upcoming patch” that will bring the Hanzo nerf may drop next week, along with the release of the game’s second Anniversary event. The recently detailed Anniversary event will run from May 22nd to June 11th, and the event’s Developer Update video teased some potentially major surprises in store.
