The recently detailed special editions for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 suggest that the shooter’s post-launch DLC will be exclusive to the season pass and not available separately.
The season pass, called the Black Ops Pass, will be included in the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition, Digital Deluxe Enhanced Edition, and Pro Edition. Under the Black Ops Pass description on the special edition blog post, publisher Activision explains that it is doing away with the separate content packs of games past, and will instead release all of the game’s DLC through the season pass at more regular intervals throughout the year.
The content included in the Black Ops Pass is as follows:
- “Classified,” a Bonus Zombies Experience, available at Launch
- 4 Additional All-New Zombies Experiences
- 12 Multiplayer Maps
- 4 Exclusive Blackout Characters
More concerning than the post-launch content’s release pattern is what it suggests about the game’s pricing model. Under this release pattern, all post-launch content will presumably be locked behind the season pass. It is technically possible that each individual piece of content will be available for separate purchase, instead of being sold in consolidated packs like before, but it seems extremely unlikely given how much it would fracture the community, particularly in the case of the multiplayer maps.
Details that leaked shortly after the game’s reveal event had many fans thinking the developer would release all multiplayer maps for free, with the season pass exclusively supplying Zombies maps, but the Black Ops Pass breakdown makes this look unlikely. The special edition blog post assures us that more details will be revealed soon, so hopefully fans will learn more at one of the remaining E3 press conferences.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is slated to launch October 12th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
