Update: There is now reason to believe that the information covered below is the result of a deliberate hoax rather than a genuine leak. EGM regrets not investigating more thoroughly before posting, but have chosen to leave the original article up for the sake of transparency.
Original story: New statements from someone claiming to be a Rockstar insider could give fans the most insight yet into the Red Dead Redemption 2 story and gameplay—assuming they are the real deal.
The so-called leaks were originally posted to 4chan before a more comprehensive breakdown of the information was posted to Reddit. Most significantly, the leak undermines theories that the game is be a prequel, set in the early days of past protagonist John Marston’s life. Instead, the leak claims that players will take on the role of Jack Marston, John’s son, about three years after the conclusion of the first game—an idea that will make sense to anyone that completed the original story.
Jack gets provoked into a quest based on “some things he finds in his father’s journal.” This results in a variety of encounters with past associates of his father’s who teach Jack about his father’s past. These associates will include members of John Marston’s original gang, according to the leak, who can be seen in the game’s reveal trailer. The leaker claims the game will feature numerous flashback sequences in which players will take control of characters from the past, which could be the answer to rumors of both multiple playable characters and the game’s prequel setting.
In terms of gameplay, there are purportedly at least two major towns the player can explore, along with many “little places scattered” around the map to be discovered. The map itself is proposed to be potentially bigger than that of Grand Theft Auto V. Like Grand Theft Auto V, the leak claims Red Dead Redemption 2 will also feature heists, allowing players to rob banks, trains, saloons, and more, as well as kidnap people to hold them for ransom.
The multiplayer of Red Dead Redemption 2 will be “very economy driven”, according to the leak, meaning players will be permitted to trade and sell resources amongst each other. As players progress, they will purportedly unlock significant customization options, such as Gatling guns for the backs of wagons, as well as unique ridable mounts, such as Zebra or Buffalo. Five or six different gangs may also be available for the player to align themselves with, opening various gameplay opportunities like strategic hunting or gambling in a casino.
There is some reason to believe the leaker, as they provided an image of the interior of Rockstar Games. Additionally, one commenter on Reddit and an article from Game Rant claim the source has previous provided accurate information about GTA Online before it was public knowledge, but if that’s true there’s doesn’t seem to be much in the way of easily accessible evidence backing up that claim. Fans shouldn’t take any of this information at face value, though it may turn out to be true.
As for information we can confirm for Red Dead Redemption 2, the game was originally set to launch in fall of 2017 before a recent delay pushed it past April 1st of 2018, launching for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
