Next-Gen Xbox Tech Could Turn Your Room into a 3D Environment

Posted on September 11, 2012 AT 05:19am

Microsoft’s R&D division is working on a new display technology that will be capable of projecting a full 3D environment onto the walls of a player’s bedroom/living area, a new patent has revealed.

The patent calls the device an “environmental display,” and claims that it can project 360-degree game worlds across all four walls of a room using advanced projection technology. The device will contain a 3D depth camera which can detect a player’s position in the room by emitting light patterns that bounce off the player, similar to how Kinect works.

The patent also mentions that the tech will be used in conjunction with Microsoft’s Kinect Glasses, which are 3D shutter glasses that allow the Kinect camera to register which way a player is looking by sending signals to the device. The document states that Microsoft is working on “an immersive display environment that is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display.”

The possibilities of what could be achieved using this technology are practically mind-boggling, imagine a time where you’re not just playing a game, you are physically in it. You could be standing in the middle of your room and be able to look around the game world simply by actually looking around. It honestly sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, and I really can’t wait to see what Microsoft does with this idea.

What do you think of the idea? Would you buy one? Let us know in the comments below.
