Anthem

Anthem has a deliberate focus on cooperative action, but there is still a deep story to be told in between the massive monster fights.

Anthem‘s first story trailer dropped during this year’s Game Awards, showing a civilization that is constantly fighting for survival. The game world is imbued with a powerful energy called the Anthem of Creation, which was harnessed by the beings that occupied the planet before our freelancers roamed its land.

Despite humanity’s meager understanding of the Anthem of Creation, some believe its power can be controlled. Toward the end of the trailer, fans meet the game’s first human enemy, the Monitor, who leads a division of Javelin-wearing freelancers called the Dominion. The Monitor wants to save humanity by bringing it under his command, which he intends to do by controlling the Anthem of Creation without appreciating the destruction it could bring forth.

Some of the characters fighting on the side of the player include Halek, Faye, Owen, Tassen, and Brin, all of whom are allies residing within the walls of the city of Tarsus. Halek is an engineer that supports the player from his mobile Strider base, while the player’s cipher, Owen, relays key information about missions. Faye is also a cipher, and while she isn’t the player’s active contact, she is still crucial to the progression of the story. Tassen and Brin will also play significant roles in the player’s quest, with Tassen as part of the Corvis group and Brin aligned with the Sentinels (essentially the Tarsus equivalent of the CIA and police force, respectively).

Several of these personalities can be met in Anthem‘s new story trailer below.

Anthem is slated to launch February 22nd on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, dropping one week early for EA/Origin Access members. The game’s closed alpha goes live this weekend, with a VIP demo running January 25th-27th, and an open demo running February 1st-3rd.
