Apex Legends eight heroes offer a ton of personality and interesting strategic options to the battle royale genre, but they’re also responsible for the game’s biggest imbalance: They all have different hitboxes.
Fans have been speculating since the game launched that characters like Gibraltar and Caustic are at a disadvantage in firefights against characters like Wraith and Lifeline since they’re much bigger, though there wasn’t much proof that their hitboxes were different from the other characters’. Thankfully, YouTuber SookieSpy recently tested the hitboxes for all eight characters currently in the game, and it turns out that using Caustic or Gibraltar is basically a death wish.
SookieSpy had to test the hitboxes in live gameplay environments since Apex Legends doesn’t yet offer private servers, in as scientific a way as possible, and what the YouTuber found is pretty eye-opening. Placing each character against the same wall at the same distance, SookieSpy discovered that Gibraltar and Caustic have noticeably larger hitboxes than characters like Wraith or Lifeline. Wraith, in particular, has an incredibly small hitbox in her idle animation, thanks to her posture.
In response, some fans have suggested giving the characters with larger hitboxes a slightly bigger health bar, though others have rejected this suggestion, saying it will then give those characters an unfair advantage in one-on-one firefights (as if the armor system doesn’t already throw that completely out of whack).
For its part, developer Respawn Entertainment has said that it’s “aware” of this hitbox discrepancy and that it was “discussing” it, according to community manager Jay Frechette on Reddit (via PC Gamer).
Personally, I don’t see the different hitboxes being that big of a deal. Gibraltar’s got his ADS shield and Caustic has his blinding poison gas, so it’s not like they don’t have options, too. If Respawn is going to fix anything, it should be the servers.
