Arc System Works Now Clear To Make New Guilty Gear

Posted on October 28, 2011 AT 02:04pm

THE BUZZ: When Arc System Works—the creators of the popular 2D fighting franchise Guilty Gear—parted ways with Sega Sammy, legal issues and ownership rights kept the developer from being able to make more games in the series. In turn, this lead ASW to create BlazBlue—a new property that the company would fully own and have control over.

Now, however, there’s hope again for fans of Sol Badguy, Millia Rage, Baiken, and Bridget. Speaking to Gamasutra’s Christian Nutt, Guilty Gear‘s director Daisuke Ishiwatari says that there’s now nothing stopping ASW from making a new chapter of the Guilty Gear saga. Of course, that isn’t a promise that such a game will be coming.

“Well, rumors are rumors,” Ishiwatari told Gamasutra, in reference to talk on the internet about a possible return of the franchise. “I’d be lying if I said there were no problems at all, but much of that has been cleared away since. There’s no impediment to making it now.

“A lot of people are definitely asking what’s up with the series, that’s true; a lot of gamers want to see it. I can’t say when it may come out or anything like that, but I definitely want to answer the voices of the fans someday.”

EGM’s TAKE: Can somebody say Guilty Gear vs. BlazBlue? I’d certainly go for that!

On a more serious note, this puts Arc System Works in an interesting situation. On one hand, I’m sure many people would love to see Guilty Gear return. On the other, time has moved on, and BlazBlue is their main focus now. Working on Guilty Gear could take away from BlazBlue, which might not be what the company wants.

Of course, the Guilty Gear series surely means a lot to the people at ASW, so it’s unthinkable that they don’t at least do something new with it.
