Art Competition Celebrates And Supports Women In Gaming

Posted on February 17, 2012 AT 01:52pm

THE BUZZ: Sony Online Entertainment has kicked off its 2012 Gamers in Real Life game design competition, aimed at inspiring women’s involvement in the video game industry.

EGM’s TAKE: Women in gaming is a very interesting—and sometimes extremely delicate—topic. For a long time seen as a hobby and industry strictly for men, gender equality in gaming has been improving over recently years—but there’s still a long ways to go.

To help encourage more females to get involved in game development, SOE is now in its fifth year of running Gamers in Real Life—or G.I.R.L. for short. Applicants are asked to submit two pieces of concept or 3D art based around two SOE games—EverQuest II or Planetside 2—along with the application and entry forms.

The winning entry will receive a $10,000 scholarship to be used towards “tuition and other educational expenses” for the winner’s school of enrollment. As well, the winner will also have the chance to take part in a 10-week paid internship at SOE’s headquarters in San Diego.

“The goal of G.I.R.L. has always been of opportunity, education and recruitment to get more women into the gaming industry,” Sony Online Entertainment senior vice president of global sales and marketing Laura Naviaux said in the official announcement of the launch of the competition for this year. “Over the last few years, we have been nothing short of impressed with the hundreds of amazing submissions from talented students nationwide. Now in our fifth year, we can’t wait to see the creativity that comes out of the G.I.R.L. program.”
