Assassin’s Creed Creator: First Game Was Better, More ‘Pure’ Than Sequels

Although Assassin’s Creed III is aiming to be the biggest production in the franchise’s history, the creator of the series says that the original game still holds a special place in his heart. According to former Ubisoft developer Patrice Désilets, the first Assassin’s Creed will remain the best game out of all of them because it was the ‘purest’ gaming experience.

Latest News Explorer relays Désilets’ view, from an interview with Edge:

“I like the first Assassin’s Creed because it’s the purest one. There’s a bunch of stories that you can have, but it’s all in your head. You have to create your own adventures.”

“Whereas in Assassin’s Creed II,” Désilets continued, “we created the adventures for you and you’re following them. For me, the first one is an amazing toy. The second one is the real game with rules and missions and it’s really precise. But personally I like the poetry of the first one. It’s pure.

“With Assassin’s Creed, our problem was we never actually asked anyone to do it. Most of the players just pass by those setups, but in Assassin’s Creed II, we had a mission for all of them,” he added.

With the exception of Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines (for PSP),  Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery (NDS), and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, the original title is one of the least critically acclaimed games in the series.

Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood have also surpassed the original game in total worldwide sales across all platforms.

Patrice Désilets left Ubisoft in the middle of 2010, during the development and production of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. He has since returned to the gaming industry, taking up an office with THQ in Montreal.
