It’s been said by Ubisoft in the past that Assassin’s Creed is set up so it can carry on forever, but does that mean that poor Desmond will never catch a break? It appears that he will never truly be free according to writer Corey May, however his story will be given a fitting conclusion.
The plan, according to May, is to keep Desmond around as a meta-character, so he will probably not be seen very much in future games but will always be alluded to or mentioned in some form.
“In a perfect world, we will be able to conclude his story. He will take his place amongst the other major characters in our universe, as someone who is referenced and alluded to,” he told Game Informer.“This is bigger than just Desmond. We owe it to the fans, especially those who would like to see something a little bit new and different in that space, to start to branch out. At the same time, I’d like to at least finish what we started, so he deserves a conclusion, a resolution.”
EGM’s TAKE: Desmond may not have been the star of the show in any Assassin’s Creed game, but fans will still be sad to see him go. He offered an anchor to the real world, no matter how crazy things got in the past. Without his presence the story would have become lost in fantasy. Desmond managed to offer a certain level of realism to the whole story, as you were able to think that a machine could possibly be built like the Animus. Had it just been the Assassins in the past, we don’t feel that the story would have been half as captivating.
