Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag features up to five hours of optional modern day content to explore, according to Ubisoft. However, only around 30 minutes of this content is required to be completed as part of the main plot.
According to the publisher, players will leave the Animus five times during the game, and each time the required tasks will only take a few minutes to complete. The additional content allows players to discover and hack computers to gain access to new rooms in order to find out information. This modern day section will explain what happened to Desmond after Assassin’s Creed III.
“It’s there to progress the story because there’s this meta story that we’re telling,” the publisher wrote. “Why are you researching Edward? Why him specifically? What did he do that’s interesting? There is a story that connects everything together. We pretty much tried to boil it down to its most core essence because we know there are people out there who really don’t like the present day, and that’s okay. You don’t have to like it, but it’s part of the brand. For the people who like the present day and are big fans, we put in a lot of fan service and a lot of fun optional content. You get to choose if you want it or not.”
Assassin’s Creed IV will be available from October 29 in North America for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. The PlayStation 4 version launches November 15, followed by PC on November 19, and finally Xbox One on November 22.
