Assassin’s Creed IV ‘Freedom Cry’ Launch Trailer Shows an Adéwale Turned Liberator

Posted on December 16, 2013 AT 11:31am

Ubisoft has released a launch trailer for Assassin’s Creed IV’s first story-driven DLC, “Freedom Cry,” in anticipation of its release tomorrow.

Set 15 years after the events of Black Flag, “Freedom Cry” features a playable Adéwale—former quartermaster to Edward in ACIV, now Assassin—on a quest to liberate slaves on St. Domingue (modern-day Haiti). The story was penned by Jill Murray, writer of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and narrative design director at Ubisoft Québec.

“We’re still true to how his character was established in Black Flag,” Murray said in a post on the Ubisoft Blog, describing their approach to the character and the DLC’s premise. “He’s not standing in for every black man who was ever a slave in the 18th century. He’s Adéwale. He’s the character we know. He has the wit that we’ve come to expect; he has heart. We see him as an older guy. He’s matured and changed in some small ways. I think those are the kinds of character details that always take precedence over pretty much everything else that can happen in the story.”

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s “Freedom Cry” DLC launches tomorrow on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC for $9.99.
