Atlus Announces Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time for English Release

Posted on January 18, 2012 AT 02:41pm

THE BUZZ: Late last year, Atlus USA teased a new upcoming PSP release, which ended up being Sting’s Gungnir. That isn’t the only ‘G’-titled PSP game they have in store for us, however.

EGM’s TAKE: So today, Atlus made it official—they’ll be bringing over Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time for the PSP, which is the first time this chapter of the game—aka Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded—has made its way to our shores.

Growlanser, of course, is a long-running and extremely deep Japanese strategy RPG series—a series known for its vast array of characters, sweeping storylines, and trademark artwork by much-beloved Japanese artist Satoshi Urushihara.

The PSP’s situation here in the US is quite interesting—the platform, at this point, is considered dead by most, and retail shelving almost completely forgot about the system quite some time ago. And yet, we’re still getting some of the great games from Japan coming over, thanks to companies like Atlus, XSEED, Aksys, NIS America, and others who still believe in giving their hardcore fans what they want.

There is at least one downside revealed so far to this release of Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time—the Japanese voices will not be included, and what pieces of the game do retain their voice acting—the anime cutscenes—will be English-only. The reason for this seems to be one of licensing restrictions, and it comes down to a question: Do we want a game which may not give us everything we want in that regard, but which we can still play and enjoy, or do we not want the game period?

I think it’s pretty clear—getting to play the game is (almost) always better than not getting to. And long live the PSP!

Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time will be hitting on PSP on July 24th.
