Author Drops Assassin’s Creed Copyright Lawsuit

American author John L. Beiswenger has dropped his lawsuit against Ubisoft, in which he claimed that the Assassin’s Creed series stole ideas from his novel, Link.
Gametrailers, who was also cited in the lawsuit, have apparently settled with the author for an undisclosed amount. Beiswenger named Gametrailers in the lawsuit for making money off of hosting numerous online videos from the series. He originally claimed in his lawsuit that ”a link device and process whereby ancestral memories can be accessed, recalled, relived, and re-experienced by the user,” was his idea and that Ubisoft was profiting off of it. Beiswenger released the following statement:
“I filed the Complaint and Motion for Preliminary Injunction in federal court because I believe authors should vigorously defend their rights in their creative works.”
“Otherwise, the laws protecting them simply have no purpose. Regrettably, the resources required to defend those rights are unavailable to many individual creators. As a result, rampant infringement is occurring with impunity.”
He sought $5.25 million in damages and requested that Assassin’s Creed III be withheld from the market. Since he filed his dismissal without prejudice he maintains the right to reinstate his lawsuit at any time. As soon as we all heard news of the lawsuit it was obvious that winning it would prove difficult, especially with the fact that it took him several games before choosing to file. We feel that this is probably the last time we’ll ever hear about this.
Do you think he had a case or is he just another guy trying to make a quick buck?
