Today, May 1, marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Ayrton Senna, an incredibly gifted Formula One driver, in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. To mark the occasion, Polyphony will be releasing some special in-game content for Gran Turismo 6 as well as releasing a short film commemorating his life.
“Exactly 20 years from when the world went into mourning: Gran Turismo has produced content that follows his beginnings and motorsports career, the “Ayrton Senna Tribute”, under a partnership with the non-profit organization “Ayrton Senna Institute” which carries on the legacy and will of Ayrton Senna to this day,” the developer wrote. “This is a free update that will be released in the latter half of May through the PlayStation®3 exclusive title “Gran Turismo 6.”
One of these in-game bonuses appears to be the Lotus 97T, the car that helped Senna take his first victory. During a weekend that he also earned pole position and recorded the fastest lap.
It’s worth noting, out of respect, that another driver tragically lost his life earlier that weekend in Qualifying, Austrian Roland Ratzenberger. Veteran driver Rubens Barrichello was also knocked unconscious during that weekend when his car leaped the meter-high crash barrier and hit a fence protecting the crowd.
Senna’s was the last fatal crash in Formula One, with his death sparking a massive overhaul of the sport’s rules and safety regulations, which have protected drivers to this day.
