Earlier today DICE announced the official release date of Battlefield 3‘s upcoming Aftermath DLC and also released a debut trailer, now the developer has offered up a few more details about what will be included in the DLC.
The DLC will introduce four new multiplayer maps all set after the earthquake that occurs in the game’s single-player campaign, this means that players will have to adapt their styles to take into account multiple battle levels and uneven terrain. All of the soldiers used on these new maps reflect the devastation that the earthquake caused as they all have cuts, bruises, and their clothing is torn.
A new game mode is also set to be introduced called Scavenger Mode, in this players start off on a map with only a knife, grenade, and side arm, players must scavenge around the map looking for weapon drops that contain more powerful weapons in order to survive. “In Scavenger mode, weapons spawn in predetermined locations all over the map, so it pays to learn the map to stand a fighting chance. The particular weapons spawning at these points however have an element of randomness to them, so in order to survive a Scavenger round you will have to explore as much of the map as possible,” DICE explains.
There’s also a brand new weapon being added in Aftermath in the form of a crossbow which should really change up the way that people attack and should add a certain level of stealth to the game. “Inspired by real life military engineering ingenuity, this crossbow is created by taking the stock of a malfunctioning assault rifle and assembling with the other parts needed, like a piece of wire for the string (maybe found inside a broken down car), some scrap metal for the bow mechanic and a scope. Just add duct tape, and you have a new and silent way to deliver deadly force to the enemy,” the developer reveals.
Finally Aftermath will include three new vehicles one each for the U.S. and Russians and a shared one across both teams. DICE goes into detail about the three vehicles below:
“The “Phoenix” (US) and the “Barsuk” (for the Russian team, meaning “badger”) is a light transport where a grenade machine launcher has been fitted at the back in conjunction with the already existing machine gun on top, making it a ride that will carry troops quickly from A to B while also being able to dish out explosive damage to enemy vehicles and structures and fend off approaching infantry.”
“Finally, there’s the “Rhino” – originally a completely civilian vehicle, but in Aftermath, you have to make do with what you can get your bandaged hands on. This formerly civilian van has been retrofitted with armor and a remote controlled machine gun controlled by the driver to turn it into a medium heavy troop transport.”
