Battlefield 3 PC Patches Are Delayed by Console Certification Process

Posted on March 28, 2012 AT 07:11am

THE BUZZ: DICE has attributed the delay of PC patches to the console certification process.

Usually PC games receive lots of little patches in order to fix issues as they arise, however DICE has been holding back PC patches and releasing them all in one go to allow them to be tested before release.

DICE executive producer Patrick Bach was asked by PC Gamer if the patches were being delivered in one go due to console manufacturer’s requirements.

“Yes,” he replied. “There are benefits to it, because you get proper testing. There’s a lot of process that is there to guarantee a great gameplay experience.”

“We have had problems with patching in things like Battlefield 2 where you had to patch the patch because the patch screwed it up and then you have to apply a patch to the patch to the patch. And that’s, from a player perspective, that’s not a great experience – ‘Oh is this the 6.8 patch or the 6.9? Because the 6.8 broke the game and now you need to unbreak it!’ So getting focus and testing and all those things is actually a positive.”

However, Bach did admit that it can be frustrating waiting to deploy fixes.

“It’s very frustrating when it comes to… you have the fix, it’s done but you can’t roll it out. But again, it’s not unique to us – everyone lives in this reality,” he said. ”Our problem with support is we have a very big and complex game, so if something needs to be fixed, we need to be sure that it doesn’t break something at the other end and again, like I said, we don’t want to do emergency fixes to compensate for a problem in a specific area.”

EGM’s TAKE: It appears that the console versions of Battlefield 3 are actually holding up the PC version. It’s must be annoying to PC players when they have issues that they know could easily be patched by have to wait until a console patch can be deployed, which usually takes up to a month. News like this will certainly not help to heal the divide between console and PC players, in fact it’s more likely to increase it. Hopefully DICE will decide to keep the PC version separate in future titles.
