Behind-The-Scenes Details Revealed About Halo 4 Map Warehouse

Posted on March 29, 2012 AT 02:33pm

THE BUZZ: 343 Industries has lifted the lid on one of Halo 4‘s first maps, an ambitious stage currently titled “Warehouse”.

EGM’s TAKE: “Inspiration for this map came from a wide variety of places, including oil refineries, giant mechs from films and cartoons, NASA imagery of gas giants, naval shipyards, and aircraft carriers, to name a few,” 343 Industries’ Bs Angel writes on the Halo Waypoint site. “We also referenced numerous well-developed sci-fi places throughout its development.”

She’s referring to Warehouse, a map for the upcoming Halo 4. The team wanted to craft a smaller Slayer-dedicated map, one that could have a symmetrical design while also not being “generic”.

“Because Warhouse is a symmetrical map, our greatest challenge was making sure players know where they are at any given point, and yet having it make sense as an inspiring visual story,” Bs Angel continues. “There are lots of complex mirrored paths which could be overwhelming, so we had to develop landmarks and key features to give players a sense of unique position.”

The hope was to make Warehouse—or whatever its final name will end up being—similar competition-wise to previous, older symmetrical maps from the Halo series. At the same time, the team at 343 hopes to also find inspiration from the “industrial close-quarters combat in more recent games.”

“We wanted it to feel like something memorable, from an interesting and unseen part of the Halo universe, that tells a story. ”
