The NPD Report for October details the top 20 best selling games throughout the month, and it was not the best month for Bethesda Softworks.

The top three selling games across all platforms during October came in as Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Assassin’s Creed Origins, and Super Mario Odyssey, in that order. Publisher Bethesda Softworks launched two high-profile sequels during the month—The Evil Within 2 and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus—but neither of these titles even managed to crack the top 10, coming in at 13 and 14, respectively.

The full list of October’s top 20 best selling games across all platforms can be found below. The rank of any title with an asterisk does not account for digital sales, so it is likely Bethesda’s two sequels are doing better than the list indicates, if digital sales were to be factored in.

  1. Middle-earth: Shadow of War
  2. Assassin’s Creed Origins
  3. Super Mario Odyssey**
  4. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
  5. NBA 2K18
  6. FIFA 18
  7. WWE 2K18
  8. Madden NFL 18
  9. Destiny 2*
  10. Forza Motorsport 7
  11. Gran Turismo Sport
  12. Grand Theft Auto V
  13. The Evil Within 2*
  14. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus*
  15. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
  16. Mario Kart 8*
  17. Fire Emblem: Warriors*
  18. Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  19. NHL 18
  20. Rainbow Six Siege

The only list on which Bethesda got a break was the top 10 selling PS4 games for October, in which The Evil Within 2 managed to make number 10. Other lists provided by the NPD Group in the report include the top 10 selling Xbox One games, top 10 selling Nintendo Switch games, top 10 selling 3DS games, top 10 selling games of 2017, and top 10 selling games in the last 12 month period. No specific sales numbers for individual titles were offered, which would likely come from the publisher if released.

The industry in general managed to rack up $474 million in total game sales during the month of October. This is down 20 percent from last year, but the report attributes this to 2016’s massive success of Battlefield 1. The total amount pulled in by hardware sales for the month in the US exceeded $238 million, up 10 percent from last year, primarily thanks to the Nintendo Switch.
