BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea Art Inspired by French Version of Film Noir Poster

Posted on July 30, 2013 AT 02:05pm

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea‘s key art look familiar? We thought so, too. Turns out, it was inspired by the French poster for the 1942 film noir This Gun for Hire.

Levine is notorious for collecting artwork and clippings that inspire the art direction and writing in his games. But working on the assumption that Levine was inspired by the film itself, not just its poster, perhaps the film’s storyline might give us a clue as to what to expect from Burial at Sea while we otherwise wait in anticipation for its arrival.

So in This Gun for Hire, LAPD detective Michael Crane goes on vacation in San Francisco to visit his girlfriend, Ellen Graham. Per the nature of noir/detective stories, Crane finds himself caught up in the investigation of one Albert Baker, a chemist in possession of a coveted chemical formula (Plasmids?). Long story short, Baker’s chemical formula was for a poison gas that Nitro Chemical, employer of the film’s villains, wants to sell to the Japanese.

Has EGM cracked Burial at Sea wide open? Probably not. But it was neat to discover what is clearly one of Levine’s sources of inspirations, and equally as fun to speculate on just how much This Gun for Hire might’ve influenced Burial at Sea. E for Effort!
