BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode 2 will feature a non-lethal 1998 mode

Posted on February 27, 2014 AT 10:55am

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode 2 will feature a Thief-inspired 1998 Mode in which players must complete the BioShock DLC using only non-lethal tools, creative director Ken Levine announced today.

“In Burial at Sea – Episode 2 we put a focus on balance and stealth mechanics,” said Ken Levine. “As we were developing this new style of gameplay, we started to see people self-impose non-lethal playthrough’s. Given the fan reception of 1999 Mode, we thought it would be cool to give them another way to play Burial at Sea that challenged their mastery of stealth tools.”

It’s worth noting that Ken Levine was one of the lead designers on the original Thief: The Dark Project, which launched—you guessed it—on Windows PC in 1998.

BioShock Infinite’s 1999 Mode upped enemy difficulty, removed navigational and aim assists, increases the amount of money lost when reviving, and requires players manage resources more thoughtfully.

Burial at Sea – Episode 2 launches on Windows PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 March 25.
