THE BUZZ: Could a Mass Effect MMORPG every happen? BioWare founders Drs. Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka comment on the idea.
EGM’s TAKE: Any time a game universe gets popular enough, somebody somewhere will bring up the idea of making an MMORPG based around it. Unsurprisingly, that idea has been brought up many times in regards to Mass Effect—and especially now that developer BioWare has released their major MMO project Star Wars: The Old Republic.
In speaking with the two, the Penny Arcade Report directly asked them about the idea of a Mass Effect MMO.
“Now that we’ve learned MMOs are really easy to make, and simple to run after the fact, we’re on it!” Dr. Zeschuk told the PA Report jokingly. “The interesting thing, the implication of a Mass Effect MMO has so many expectations. We already bit off a big thing to chew with a Star Wars MMO, and that’s not so small.”
Zeschuk goes on to say that while the task would be daunting, it would also allow for the opportunity to develop upon a lot of different ideas. He also says that the “possibility space”—a term coined by Will Wright to describe what a game needs to deliver to the player in terms of what can and can’t be done—is already huge for Mass Effect simply to appease the single-player experience; giving that same possibility space to an MMO would be a far larger task.
It’s funny, because I grew up loving Star Wars—and yet, the idea of playing games set in that universe is totally unappealing to me. Meanwhile, as little interest as I have in most other sci-fi, I’ve totally grown attached to the Mass Effect universe. Could it work as an MMO? I’m not really so sure. Would I be excited to at least give such a gaming effort a try? Absolutely.
